Road construction and bridge works in Sierra Leone
ASSAS undertakes road construction in Sierra Leone, including rehabilitation, asphalting, drainage and bridge maintenance or strengthening. Each package needs defined limits, a design and a measured scope. The road surface is one part of the contract. Formation, pavement layers, water crossings and the discharge of surface water also determine what must be built and how it is priced.
Define the road and drainage package
A road quotation needs its route, length, widths, levels and pavement specification. Rehabilitation requires information about the existing road and the defects to be addressed. The agreed package identifies earthworks, pavement layers, surfacing, shoulders, side drains, culverts and reinstatement, with boundaries between new construction and retained work shown on the drawings.
Drainage belongs in the same discussion as the road. The design should identify where runoff is collected, where it crosses the carriageway and where it discharges. Accesses and adjoining land also need consideration. Pricing the surfacing while leaving drainage unresolved can change both the construction sequence and the final scope.
Investigate and test against the specification
Ground conditions and pavement materials affect the design and the work required. ASSAS delivers survey, ground investigation and materials testing through Group staff and specialist partners, including CBR and DCP testing to the applicable AASHTO methods. The project specification identifies the testing required, acceptance criteria and reports to be supplied.
Site records should distinguish the material proposed, the material delivered and the work accepted. The sequence includes inspection before a completed layer is covered. Any replacement of unsuitable material or change to the specified pavement follows the design review and written variation process. Quantities and decisions remain traceable to the affected section of road.
Set the bridge scope from the structure
Bridge maintenance and strengthening start with the structure's condition and the engineer's scope. The work may concern concrete, steelwork, joints, bearings, waterproofing or associated approaches. An inspection and design establish the required intervention. A quotation should not assume that defects visible from the carriageway describe the whole structure.
Access below and around a bridge, water levels and the need to maintain passage affect the method and programme. These requirements are recorded for the specific structure. Traffic arrangements, temporary works and responsibilities for approvals must be identified before the construction sequence is agreed.
Plan delivery around local conditions
Wet weather can affect formation, haul routes and access to a working road. The programme needs drainage and protection arrangements before exposed work is vulnerable. In Freetown, the relationship between roads, hillside runoff and downstream channels makes the route of water a site planning issue as well as a drawing detail.
We price measured work through a bill of quantities. Written contracts establish rates, programme, payment and variations. One named site lead takes responsibility for the package, supported by cost records and written progress reporting. Our How we work page explains the process. Civil and infrastructure, and quantity surveying, are related services.
Client questions
Can you price rehabilitation rather than a new road?
Yes. The scope identifies the existing pavement, drainage and defects, together with the design of the proposed repairs. We measure the agreed intervention and record assumptions about retained work.
Do you include drains and culverts?
They are included where the drawings and agreed scope require them. The quotation identifies crossings, channels, discharge points and related earthworks so the surface and drainage packages can be reviewed together.
Can you arrange CBR and DCP testing?
ASSAS delivers testing through Group staff and specialist partners, including CBR and DCP to applicable AASHTO methods. The project specification determines the tests and reporting required.
Can traffic continue during the work?
That depends on the route, available width and agreed traffic arrangements. The proposed sequence identifies access restrictions and temporary measures before the programme is accepted.
How do you price bridge strengthening?
Pricing follows the condition assessment and engineer's design. The measured scope identifies the structural work, access and temporary arrangements rather than relying on a price for an unspecified repair.
